CHARLESWORTH, LOW STRIKE TO TRIGGER BUCKIE HIGHLAND FLING
ITS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GOALS I'VE SCORED, SAYS THISTLE'S SUPER SUBSTITUTE ANDY
Buckie Thistle retained their Highland League title in style on Saturday with a last-minute winner against closest challengers Deveronvale at Victoria Park.
A draw would have been enough for Thistle but after they trailed to Mark Chisholm's first-half header, they completed their recovery in style.
Second-half goals from Martin Charlesworth and Andy Low, a last minute free kick, ensured the championship trophy remained at Victoria Park.
The winning feeling was all the sweeter for Low as the 26-year-old Aberdonian re-covered from a serious knee injury to take his place in the team for the title defence.
Low said: "I missed out on last year's championship sucess when I didn't kick a ball due to a year out with a cruciate injury.
"I can't believe this has happened. It more than makes up for the disappointment of last season and it's one of the most important goals I've scored.
"I came off the bench with a few minutes to go as Gary Clark was struggling with an injury. Before I came off the bench I said I fancied I would score. When we were awarded that last-minute free kick Michael Morrison was going to take it, but I asked him if I could take it.
"I felt confident as soon as I stepped up to take it and I'm delighted it went in as the lads deserved their victory."
Man-of-the-match Charlesworth said: "I could have scored a hat-trick but probably scored with the most difficult chance of the afternoon.
"A few minutes after I scored the equaliser I thought I'd put us ahead when the ball hit the inside of the post.
"I was worrid at half-time. We were down when I thought we were the better team but when things go against you it's usually not your day. Our manager Gregg Carrol had a word at half-time he called for calm, asked the midfield to get a bit tighter, whihc they did, and the game was probably won in midfield where Dave MacRae, Donnie Munro and Gary Clark were magnificent."
