LAMBIE'S BIG TESTIMONIAL
On Sunday 15 July, Paul Lamberton's Testimonial match against Aberdeen FC, the biggest match at Victoria Park, for a few years now, is rapidly approaching and anticipation is running high, amongst the local footballing fraternity.
A great tribute that has been paid to the Jags' genial Captain, by Jimmy Calderwood, the Dons' Manager, who has been very forthright in his comments regarding players of Lambie's stature, in his daily column in the P&J.
That a player would remain for ten years or more, with a single club these days, is a rare thing and deserves the recognition that this man is being accorded, is the view of the Dons' boss, a view echoed, I am sure, by the Jags' support.
Cove Rangers' winger John Brown received a similar compliment, when what is likely to be the Dons' 1st XI supplied the opposition in his own testimonial on Friday night and it is hoped that, given a decent day on Sunday, a crowd equalling the 2,500 in attendance at Allan Park will be equalled, or even exceeded.
Ticket sales at Slater Sports have been exceptional and the offer of a signed Thistle top to three lucky adults who purchased their briefs for the game prior to the first weekend in July made three supporters happy, together with the two youngsters who, in the junior draw, were appointed mascots for the day.
The match takings will hopefully amount to a tidy sum and Raymond Cardno, the Testimonial Fund Chairman, with his able Committee, should be congratulated for their dedication and hard work in organising their programme.
In addition the auction at the Annual Sportsman's dinner saw a number of items sold in favour of the Skipper's pot, by kind permission of the Club.
It should also be noted that Buckie Thistle Boys Club will be providing an exhibition game with a 12.30 kick off, to warm up for the Main Programme, which commences at 2.00pm, note the earlier than normal kick off, especially those who have a goodly distance to travel.
A good turn out is anticipated and requested for, quite apart from the chance for Jags' diehards to see the Manager's new signings for next season, in the shape of Craig MacMillan, Tony Low and Graeme Stewart, Dons' supporters, both active and of the closet variety have a treat in store.
Mr Calderwood, who kindly consented to officially open the new hospitality suite, below the Main Stand, has also agreed to bring a full strength Dons team to Hansel their own new captures, including former Scottish internationalist, Jackie McNamara, Lee Mair and Jeffrey de Visscher.
A disappointment for many will be that Russell Anderson has left the Pittodrie club for the North East of England but, all in all, a colourful afternoon is anticipated, with Jamie Langfield., Andy Considine and old warhorse, Craig Brewster among the names likely to take part.
Whoever appears, lets hope the day goes off well and that our popular Skipper "Lambie" gets a good financial return.
