MATCH REPORT -- WICK ACADEMY 4 BUCKIE THISTLE 0
The Jags starting line-up showed several changes, back in were Small, Matheson, Davidson and Bruce.
Buckie kicked off "down the slope", in the face of terrible weather conditions, a stong wind and driving rain.
Wick were on the attack early, using their wind advantage and two crosses flashed across the face of the Buckie goal. Main then threw the ball at Small but the ball stuck below his feet, Weir nipped in and Main blocked with his foot for a corner.
Buckie should have gone ahead in 12 minutes, a through ball from Macrae found Bruce, the Wick keeper blocked his shot with his legs and the ball broke to Mike Macdonald who missed the target from the edge of the box.
Minutes later a cross from Napier was headed wide by Davidson.
Wick went ahead on 28 minutes when a corner was driven in at the near post, coming off the head of a Buckie player for an OWN GOAL.
The Jags could have been level two minutes later when Napier was put through on goal but Wick keeper, More, saved well for a corner.
Andy Matheson was then free inside of the box but elected to pass instead of shooting from a wide area and the chance was lost.
The first half ended with Wick on the attack, forcing a number of corner kick's.
HALF - TIME 1-0
We were informed during the half-time interval that Mr Hasson, the referee , was considering abandoning the match, no doubt he would have been told that the match "down the road", Brora v Deveronvale, had been cancelled before kick off due to the weather.
The second half started with the same wind and driving rain.
It was obvious that the wind would be an advantage to the Jags at the start of the second half as they went on the attack straight away and Wick struggled to clear the ball.
Buckie almost levelled on 53 minutes when David Macrae unleashead a real "rocket" of a shot from all of 30 yards which More tipped over.
Wick doubled their lead on 60 minutes, the ball was given away due to a slack pass and "the Academy" drove at the Jags, playing a couple of great passes which opened up the Jags defence where GARY WEIR finished confidently past Main.
Although Buckie made several substitutions, Angus for Macdonald, Brown for Matheson and Neill for Bruce it had no real impact on the match and a confident Wick side were now playing some great football.
Wick made it three on 71 minutes when the ball was cut-back from the byeline and RICHARD MACADIE smashed the ball low into the corner of the net.
It was then 4-0 minutes later when a cross was finished off by RICHARD MACADIE who nipped in to score.
Buckie's day was summed up when Charlie Brown had a snapshot which missed the target and then delayed in shooting when almost round the keeper and the chance was lost.
FINAL -SCORE 4-0
SUMMARY -- Not a good display from the Jags in terrible weather conditions, best for the Jags were Lamberton and Macrae who put a real shift in for the Jags. Even considering the conditions the Jags had four or five clear-cut chances in the first half and didn't take any of them.
Wick Academy, as we have said on this site many times before, are a side who are improving all the time and they played some great football in this match, especially when playing into the wind in the second half and they thoroughly deserved to win this match.
Next up for the Jags is a quarter final tie in the Fosters Highland League Cup AWAY AT KEITH - THIS SATURDAY 21st March (kick off 3.00pm) and Gregg Carrol should have Shewan as well as Charlesworth and Macmillan available for selection for this match.
