MIDWEEK MATCH - REPORT - BUCKIE THISTLE 3 FORMARTINE UNITED 2
Buckie eased into an Aberdeenshire Cup semi-final at Keith next Tuesday thanks to Craig MacMillan's superb injury-time header.
The home side handed a debut to new signing Zander Sutherland but Martin Charlesworth missed out with a leg strain and Ian Murray was still offshore while Formartine, sporting their all black strip, fielded Ricky Horne between the sticks in place of regular number one Stewart Gray.
Buckie Thistle opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Sutherland found Charlie Brown with a delightful through ball, Brown squared it into the path of Craig MacMillan whose shot was paried by Ricky Horne but Donnie Munro fired the rebound into the bottom corner from 10 yards.
In the 26th minute Formartine equalised when Marc Young's pinpoint cross was met by Barry Somers and his downward header from six yards gave Kevin Main, in the Buckie goal, no chance.
Keeper Horne came to his side's rescue in the 33rd minute with a brave diving save at the feet of the inrushing MacMillan who had been played through by a side-rule Paul Napier pass. Horne had to look lively again shortly after when a MacMillan through ball almost found Jamie Shewan but the visiting keeper just won the race for possession.
Buckie's Sutherland and United's Patrick Vigurs were booked within the space of 60 seconds as the action started to heat up. On the hour mark the Jags regained the lead when a brilliant Brown feed found MacMillan and although Horne managed to get a hand to the ball it wasn't enough to stop it crossing the line.
Formartine United upped the pace in search of the equaliser with McKay and Somers proving a real handful for the home defence.
The visitors levelled again in the 76th minute when James Seivwright's high free kick was nodded goalward by Somers and when Main could only parry the ball Stuart McKay was on hand to stab the ball home from two yards.
With five minutes left Robert Maitland had a glorious chance to score the winner but with only keeper Main to beat the substitute ballooned high over.
Buckie Thistle grabbed the winner in the first minute of injury time when Stevie Bruce's pass found Paul Napier and when his cross found MacMillan his bullet header flew past goalkeeper Horne.
The Jags team was ... Main, Angus, Shewan (Davidson 81), Small, McKinnon, Munro, Napier, Stewart, Brown (Bruce 82), MacMillan, Sutherland.
